'Hunger Games' Hair Stylist Talks Haymitch's 'Disheveled' Locks
Linda Flowers tells MTV News Woody Harrelson's blond wig 'gives his character a little bit of a push.'

Stylist Linda Flowers had run with Vince's "Entourage," played with "Angels & Demons" and even primped a "Social Network" tycoon for his profile picture, but the Hollywood veteran took on her hairiest project yet with the eye-popping adaptation of "The Hunger Games." As the film's hair department head, Flowers, in harmony with director Gary Ross' vision, crafted the iconic, and frequently candy-colored, 'dos of Effie Trinket and more than 500 Capitol citizens. We hopped on the phone with Flowers to chat about the meticulous mentor's look, Woody Harrelson's unconventional Haymitch style and where exactly all that hair went after Ross yelled, "Cut!"
MTV News: What was your experience reading "The Hunger Games" for the first time? Did you start formulating looks as you read?
Linda Flowers: When I read it, I fell in love with it, and I read all three of them very quickly. It's such a great story, and it's gonna appeal to so many different demographics. Anytime you get to read a book with colorful characters and they've got pink hair and blue hair, I'm in. My imagination was going crazy. I mean, how often do you get to put pink hair on somebody?
MTV: What did you and Gary discuss during your initial conversation?
Flowers: Gary's main concern was with all the colored hair. He wanted people to take the Capitol seriously, and he wanted the looks to be couture. So when you're talking about orange and aqua and pink and blue hair, the first place people go is very young, and they think it is more a street look or an urban look for kids. But the challenge was to put it on all age groups and make it look couture.
MTV: Logistically, this had to be a grand-scale production. Describe a typical day on set.
Flowers: When we were at the peak of all of our Capitol people, I had 45 hairdressers working because everyone had to go through hair and makeup. Each person had an individual look. When you do period movies, the hair is already set, the period has already been set, but there was nothing established for the look of this because it's in the future. Each person that sat down, a look had to be created for them even if they were, like, #500 on the call sheet. So that was a real challenge, and plus, not just the hairdressers to do their hair, but we had to have a clean-up crew come in when we wrapped to take everyone's hair, wigs and pieces off to reset them and get them ready for the next day. So it was an around-the-clock deal because we have 30 to 40 people doing hair and 10 to 15 to come in when we wrapped and take everyone down so the hairdressers could go home and sleep to get ready for the next day.
MTV: Who had the most time-consuming look?
Flowers: It was Effie, but the good thing was I could do Effie's hair when she wasn't in the trailer. Her hair definitely took the most time. From start to finish it was about 45 minutes, and I'm really fast. I constructed it slowly. She's one of those people who's so completely and purposefully put together that her wig would be an accessory just like a purse or a pair of shoes. So she has three wigs in the movie, and we're going to have more for her in the next movie.
She wears three different looks, and they're all the same shape. I picked a classic shape, which has a '30s finger-wave bob, and I took that and I really brushed it out, but it kept the finger waves, and I gave it a lot of volume. And then I took really heavily textured hair and put it in between the layers of her finger waves.
MTV: It sounds like you're already planning ahead for "Catching Fire."
Flowers: Yes. I prepped five or six wigs, and she only wore three in the first one, so we do have some for the second one, and I will prep more. I think everyone was afraid; they didn't want people to be taken out of the movie with it being too over-the-top or too colorful, so that's why I chose a pastel palette to start her off with in the movie. When you see her in the Capitol, it gets brighter and she gets a little more extreme.
MTV: The hairstyle that's probably raised the most eyebrows is Woody Harrelson's Haymitch look, which he fashioned after his brother. What did you think when he approached you with the concept?
Flowers: Well, he originally wanted it longer. He brought in a photo of his brother, and his brother looks just like him with the wig on. It was really what he wanted, and then, you know, I showed it to Gary, and he looked at it. He goes, "You know, I think that would be a good look for him, we just need to make it a little shorter." It looks like the period. The District 12 people kind of have a '30s-period haircut because they're very poor and they work in the mines. It kinda looked like that but really grown out.
The thing, too, when you're trying to give a character a kind of character look — someone that has hair like he does — you can make it a little dirty and a little disheveled and make it look like you haven't shampooed it recently, and it gives his character a little bit of a push. When you have no hair, you can't really give that push. You can't really see a passage of time; he's normal, then he's drunk and he woke up, and he's hungover. You can articulate that and express that through the hair. With no hair, you really can't express that. It really helped me help him with his character.
MTV: I can only imagine what some random warehouse in North Carolina must look like with hundreds of wigs lying around.
Flowers: You gotta remember, we used over 500 wigs in this movie. There is a warehouse full of trunks with wigs and stuff like that. I keep the cast wigs in a more secure — I don't keep them in a warehouse. They're actually in a very secure place that Lionsgate has.

Report: Whitney Houston's Death Caused By Accidental Drowning
With details surrounding her cause of death finally emerging, Whitney Houston is said to have passed away due to an accidental drowning.
With the L.A. County Coroner presenting the findings on Thursday (March 22), the Grammy winning singer is also said to have had signs of heart disease while cocaine consumption is also thought to have played a role in her ultimate demise.
Of Miss Houston's investigation, a source in the know told TMZ that it's "very possible" that a heart attack led to her drowning - which is contrary to early assumptions that Xanax usage caused her to fall asleep in the bathtub.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, Whitney was found dead in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in February just days before the 2012 Grammy Awards took place. She's survived by daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown.

Justin Bieber Challenges Fans To Choose 'Boyfriend' Cover Art
Bieber will let his fans pick which photo he uses for the song, out March 26.

Ke$ha Out For Vengeance In Musical March Madness
'I'm getting ready as we speak,' she tells MTV News of this year's tournament, tipping off Monday.
By James Montgomery
<P>Last year, based mainly on her attitude, the fact that she <a href="/news/articles/1644961/keha-tries-to-shock-the-world-at-casio-launch.jhtml">plays an AK-47 shaped guitar</a> and the presence of photos like <a href="http://resources2.news.com.au/images/2011/03/13/1226020/684522-ke-ha-drinks-blood.jpg" target="_blank">this</a>, Ke$ha was given an 11 seed in MTV's Musical March Madness tournament — and promptly <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/03/15/march-madness-u2-kesha-green-day-adam-lambert/">lost by a huge margin to U2</a> in the opening round. </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:747290/cp~vid%3D747290%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A747290" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER> </P><P> </P><P>Of course, she's spent the past 12 months fuming over that early exit, and now, she's going to get her shot at redemption. Nicki Minaj's 'Beez in the Trap' Sparks Drama Between Rival DJs
New York's DJ Clue and Funkmaster Flex compete over bragging rights to world premiere of Minaj's latest Roman Reloaded single.
By Rob Markman

After two of New York City's biggest rap radio DJs faced off on Tuesday night, there was clearly only one winner: Nicki Minaj. With Nicki's April 3 release date for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded inching closer, disc jocks are clamoring for exclusives from the YMCMB star, and Power 105's DJ Clue and his rival, Hot 97 DJ Funk Master Flex, tussled over bragging rights to the Queens MC's latest track.
It all started Tuesday morning when Nicki retweeted a DJ Drama message urging fans to tune into DJ Clue's show later that evening to hear the world premiere of Minaj and 2 Chainz's Roman Reloaded collaboration, "Beez in the Trap." But Clue didn't get a chance to drop the exclusive as it hit the Internet hours before his show went on air. Flex then took credit for playing spoiler by hacking into DJ Clue's email and lifting the track.
Clue quickly hit Twitter to refute Flex's account, ending his note with the hashtag #CompulsiveLiar."
Whatever the order of events, Nicki's "Beez in the Trap" single clearly came out on top. The '80s-inspired track is a departure from "Right by My Side," the R&B duet that Minaj and Chris Brown released earlier on Tuesday. Instead, "Beez" finds the Harajuku Barbie once again taking aim at unnamed rap chicks. "Bitches ain't sh-- and they ain't sayin' nothin'," she boasts on over a sparse drum track. Underground favorite 2 Chainz doesn't compromise a thing spitting alongside the multiplatinum rapper. He drops a charismatic 16-bar verse where he goes on about his Lexus LS 450, True Religion jeans and his pimp ways.
With the newly released Roman Reloaded tracks, Nicki seems to be striking a balance between melodic pop tracks ("Starships," "Right By My Side") and the rap fare that she came into the game with ("Stupid Hoe," "Roman Reloaded").
"April 3 is gonna be a doozy. It's gonna be crazy," Nicki promised when MTV News caught up with her at the NBA All-Star Game in February. "It's gonna be important for just hip-hop culture and pop culture. It's gonna be very big."
What do you think of Nicki Minaj's "Beez in the Trap"? Tell us in the comments!

Jennifer Lawrence Is 'Crazy' Good In 'Hunger Games'
'It's amazing, honestly, to watch her effortlessly flip back and forth,' Josh Hutcherson tells MTV News of castmate's performance as Katniss.

Although there were a few skeptics out there who questioned the casting of Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games," most of that chatter died down when Lionsgate started releasing photos and clips of the Oscar nominee in action as Katniss Everdeen.
Now, as we inch closer and closer toward the release date of the highly anticipated film, Lawrence's castmates have been saying how she embodies the spirit of the beloved and critically acclaimed protagonist created by author Suzanne Collins.
Lawrence's co-star and real-life friend Josh Hutcherson recently told MTV News that despite being a very different person from Katniss, the actress' ability to quickly turn the character on and off was startling.
"She is literally 180 degrees different from Katniss," Hutcherson said. "It's amazing, honestly, to watch her effortlessly flip back and forth, because she's very fun, very hilarious, and to watch her on 'Action!' go boom, right into the character is kind of impressive, so much so that she's talking and being Jennifer up until they're rolling sound and when they say 'Action!' boom, [she goes] right into character."
Hutcherson said Lawrence's abilities are so good they're unsettling. "That's what crazy people do. Crazy people change who they are as a person just like that, so she's a crazy person," he joked.
We asked Hutcherson to clarify that statement, just to be sure that he does indeed think Lawrence is crazy. "100 percent," he said with a smile, still joking. "I've said that for a long time."

Lady Gaga Launches Born This Way Foundation
'This is not an anti-bullying foundation; this is a youth-empowerment foundation,' Mother Monster says at Harvard launch event.

<P><a href="/news/articles/1677562/lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation.jhtml">Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta</a>, took over Harvard University to launch their <a href="/news/articles/1673633/lady-gaga-born-this-way-foundation.jhtml"><i>Born This Way</i> Foundation</a> on Wednesday (February 29). In front of a crowd that included <a href="/news/articles/1679223/lady-gaga-oprah-winfrey-foundation.jhtml">Oprah Winfrey</a>, the New York natives kicked off their inspirational foundation, hoping to empower the youth of America. </P><P> </P><P>"I was recently with the great Gloria Steinem, who said that sometimes the only way you can get attention to a problem is to freak people out," <a href="http://act.mtv.com/posts/lady-gaga-launches-born-this-way-foundation/">Oprah said at the event</a>." 'Break the form,' she said. You have to stop playing the game in order to change the content. Lady Gaga, with her music and her message and her own story, is breaking the form, and she is changing consciousness. She says that she wasn't put on earth just to sing songs; her passion is to be that force for good. The <i>Born This Way</i> Foundation is in line with so many of my core beliefs." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga enthusiastically opened up about the foundation and what she hopes to do with it. "I just have one thing to say before we get started: We got Oprah! ... Thank you from all of us — from my entire team, from my mother, from the bottom of the hearts of so many people who believe in what we're doing today," she said, wearing a chocolate-brown gown, brown lace gloves, towering platforms and a sparkly fishnet hat. </P><P> </P><P>"I'm not here today to give you an answer. And I'm not here to tell you I can solve these problems [of bullying]. This is about transformative change in culture over a period of time. One of the most important things I wanted to share with all of you today, it's no secret I speak out against bullying. This is not an anti-bullying foundation; this is a youth-empowerment foundation," she continued. "This is about changing the climate of the school environment and not putting the power in the hands of the teachers or the government. It is about the bubble effect. I don't believe they have the answers; I believe that you do." </P><P> </P><P>In addition to her fans, Gaga said her biggest influence to start the foundation is her own Mother Monster. "My mother really inspires me, because she talked about giving back ever since I was very, very young," she said. "And the more that I got to know my fans, the more that I realized that not everybody has that support system at home." </P><P> </P><P>Her mother later enthused that despite the snow outside, "It is even more beautiful inside because we are launching the foundation. The youth that is listening: you are the leaders of our future." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga also revealed another aspect of the foundation: "There is a bus now called the Born Brave Bus. So the Born Brave Bus is essentially a bus that is going to travel and follow my tour bus around the country, and it will welcome anyone from any walk of life to come and hang out and talk about love, acceptance, kindness and so forth. And the best thing about it it's going to be fun. It's going to essentially be a tailgate. This is not about saying, 'I need help,' but if you do, you can come. If you want to help someone else, you can come and say 'Hey, what's up?' " </P><P> </P><P>At the end of the day, Gaga said the foundation "is all about saying the power is in your hands. There really is sort of a focus on the victim, but what I want to point out today is that the victim and the bully are on the same playing field. How do we say, 'You are both equal members of society'? How do we not save not just the victim, but also the bully? I want the <i>Born This Way</i> Foundation to empower the youth of the world." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga further explained that one of the core values is teaching her fans to empower themselves to be "brave." </P><P> </P><P>"This, again, is not focused on bullying, the bravery aspect; I want for young people to know they have the power," she said. "How can we inspire young people to know they have the power to be brave?"</p>
